An Advent Message
"Halfway there.
We still wait, though.
So much happens in these weeks before Christmas, even at the church. Yet we stay in this groove, allowing this season of waiting, of preparation, to temper our festivity. It calls to mind the birth of a child, especially the first, into any family, to any mother. Such a blessing! Such a joy! Such a miracle!
And yet, there is still a crash into reality when the child comes...along with diapers and middle of the night feedings and unforeseen expenses. Advent is sort of the church's attempt to frontload some of that reality, to flip it around. We take time to reflect on what we're anticipating, if that makes sense. We purposefully spend time sitting with what we're getting ourselves into before we are into it. It doesn't minimize the celebration once we get there. If anything, it deepens the joy to have done the work ahead of time.
So light a candle in the darkness. Light two. Heck, light three or four. Let that humble light move you to focus on the humble beginnings of this saving grace we celebrate at Christmas. Because we know what happens when even a small flame catches on. It becomes a great blaze that changes the world.
But take a breath.
For now, we wait.
Halfway there."
