What in the World Sermon Discussion Group

What does the United Methodist Church say about the hot button issues of our time? How does a worldwide denomination go about saying these things? What if I don’t agree with everything the UMC says about everything?

Methodists all the way back to John Wesley in the 1700s have had strong opinions about how the gospel looks when lived out in the world.  A formal document called the Social Creed was written in 1908, morphed into the Social Principles in 1972, and a version of the latter was adopted in 2024 for a new era in the United Methodist Church.

Beginning Sunday, January 11th, Pastor Chris will preach a sermon series rooted in the Social Principles as they now stand. The following Wednesday, January 14th, a related discussion series will begin, with two sessions each week. These are important conversations, and Pastor Chris wants to make room for as many as possible to join in. They’ll also happen ahead of the sermon on each topic so he can incorporate insights from Wednesday on Sundays (you don’t need to attend both in person and online, unless you want to).

Adult Small Groups

Sunday Adult Group Opportunities

Our adult small groups and Sunday School classes span a diverse spectrum of interests and theological perspectives. Groups meet at 9:45 am (before our second Sunday service) in various rooms throughout the church.

Seekers

The Seekers meet each Sunday in the church Reception Hall from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Class coordinators include Sue Poet, Jean Lundy and Hank Wyeno. The curriculum includes three major areas of study which are taught by members of the class and guest speakers.  Those three areas include:  (1) the Bible and Topics of Theology, (2) Social Issues and (3) Personal Interests and Growth. In addition, periodic socials such as potluck dinners and BBQ’s are hosted by members of the class. All are welcome.

Friends in Faith

The Friends in Faith class meets in Room 204 (upstairs above the stage) from 9:45-10:45 a.m. This group includes a wide age range of couples and singles, many with older children s well as aging parents. As a more informal group, Friends in Faith shares their lives and studies what topics seem most relevant and interesting.  The group has a range of perspectives from traditional to progressive, and often finds themselves questioning or rethinking some of their previous theological understandings.  Friends in Faith is dedicated to learning from each other as they share the opportunity to lead and support each other through difficulties. The group also engages in different social and service activities throughout the year. All are welcome.

Fantastic Fellowship/Crusaders

This class is made up of older adults and meets in the Parlor every Sunday (year round) for in-depth Bible study and lively discussion. The class is led by the members and lasts from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Fantastic Fellowship also hosts social events monthly for a more personal connection outside of class. Everyone is welcome!

Young Adults

This new Young Adult Sunday School class meets every Sunday in the Way Station (located across the parking lot to the east) from 9:45-10:45 a.m. This group is designed to create community and good discussion with others in their 20s and 30s. Contact Hannah Lolley with questions!

Weekday Adult Group Opportunities

This weekday study opportunity gives participants a chance to extend their faith-based exploration beyond our Sunday offerings.

Enlightening Gospels Study

Enlightening Gospels study group meets alternate Monday evenings, 6:50 - 8:00 p.m. on Zoom. After studying several non-canonical gospels, including the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Philip, this group continues with books on the illumination of these less-well known Gospels of the early Christian churches, including Eye of the Heart by Cynthia Bourgeault and others. Their agenda includes an opening prayer of invocation, study of additional books, mind, body, heart centering and group-shared discussion.  The group meets periodically in person as well. Contact Marilyn Wells for more information!
